Throughout its history, The Department of Music National Pingtung University (NPTU) has committed to provide high quality of artistic and educational experience to musicians and students. The Department has trained some of the important figures in higher education in Taiwan music life. The Department professors are musicians, music educators, composers, music technician, and music therapist with good reputation, accustomed to working with students to empower their learning and to develop their potential.

The Department of Music was founded in 1993 under National Pingtung Teachers College (NPTTC) and in 2005, it transformed under the name National Pingtung University of Education (NPUE). In 2014, it expanded and merged under National Pingtung University (NPTU) with an overarching aim of “ Integrating quality teaching and professional capability into University ” . The Department always seeking to achieve excellence in teaching, research and social responsibility. Students come from Taiwan and other different countries study for undergraduate or masters level. We have many English taught courses to satisfy different needs from the students all over the world.

The curriculum in The Department of Music subsumes music performance, music education, composition, music technology, music administration, and music therapy. It has special training programmes for music technology and music therapy. The postgraduate study with divisions of ‘music performance/ composition and technology’ and ‘music education/music therapy’, which welcome students with great passion in performance, teaching, composition, digital music and music therapy.

Eminent quality of teaching and learning are always the goals of our department. Music graduates from the Department can work according to their professionals in areas of educational, community, medical and other cross-discipline system. To list a few careers, for example in educational system, there are adaptive arts teacher, early childhood arts educator, music teacher, and music professor. In community system, there are music director (e.g. church), private music instructor, nonprofit performer, higher-education administrator, program director, musicologist, vocal coach, music company, music librarian, music educational publisher, and business music. For music therapy programme graduates, they can also work in medical and cross-discipline systems, such as adult day care centers, private practice/clinic, specialist music therapy center, hospitals, and nursing homes.
